Bonding mammals such as ourselves thrive in secure connection. We can feel incredibly distressed when that sense of security is disrupted in intimate adult relationships or in childhood.
Through couples counseling, we work to de-escalate painful cycles and heal old wounds. We begin by using the Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples (EFT) framework to make sense of disconnected relationship cycles that may have running painfully for years. As we begin to pause the cycle, we can use Internal Family Systems (also known as “parts work”) to do the deep healing work that helps each partner become unstuck and shift into a place of compassion. Gradually, we work to replace old painful cycles with experiences of caring for ourselves and each other that foster a lasting sense of security and wellbeing. After stuck negative cycles are de-escalated and partners are feeling more secure in themselves and their relationship, we can address specific relationship questions or concerns about sexual intimacy that might have brought partners into therapy.
